How to overgrip your paddle

Five easy steps to a fresh, secure grip. What you need, how to wrap, and when to replace it.

Series 01
A fresh feel, in a few minutes

Wrap over the original grip, work from the bottom up, and keep each overlap even.

Before you start

An overgrip is a thin outer wrap that sits over your paddle’s existing grip. It refreshes the feel and adds a little thickness. A replacement grip is different: it replaces the original layer.

You’ll need

One overgrip, finishing tape and scissors. Follow the instructions supplied with your overgrip if they differ.

Wrap it in five steps

  1. Prepare the handle.

Remove any worn overgrip, leaving the original base grip in place. Move the rubber collar up, if fitted. Let the handle dry.

  2. Start at the bottom.

Peel away the protective film. Place the tapered end at the butt cap and make a secure first turn around the handle.

  3. Work upwards.

Rotate the paddle as you wrap. Overlap the previous turn by roughly 5 mm, keeping gentle, even tension. Smooth out wrinkles as you go.

  4. Finish neatly.

At the top of the grip, trim the loose excess at an angle with scissors, away from the paddle. Secure the end with finishing tape. Slide the collar back down if fitted.

  5. Check the feel.

Hold the paddle in your normal playing grip. The wrap should feel secure and even, with no loose end or bulky ridge. Rewrap any uncomfortable section before playing.

Which way should I wrap?

Follow the wrapping direction shown on your overgrip’s instructions. Keep the direction and tension consistent as you work up the handle, and check that the wrap feels secure in your playing hand.

When should I replace it?

Refresh it when it becomes slippery, worn or uncomfortable. Use how it feels rather than a fixed number of games. If the handle feels too thick, try a thinner overgrip instead of adding more layers.
