Gen 3 vs Gen 4: what actually matters?

What do Gen 3 and Gen 4 mean?

Generation labels are useful shorthand, but do not assume every brand uses them in the same way. Read the actual construction details before comparing paddles.

Aera uses “Gen 3” for Series 01’s construction. That does not mean every honeycomb paddle is Gen 3, or that every product with “4” in its name has a full-foam core.

An established approach

Honeycomb cores have been used in pickleball paddles for well over a decade. Generation labels came later, so the history of honeycomb is longer than the history of “Gen 3”.

That makes honeycomb an established construction, but it does not guarantee how long an individual paddle will last.

Why choose it today?

Core construction is one part of how a paddle plays. Weight, shape and surface also affect the overall feel, so compare complete paddles rather than relying on a generation label.

Our advice: try soft shots, blocks and full swings. If a honeycomb paddle gives you the touch, pace and handling you want, a newer generation label is not a reason by itself to switch.

What about the pros?

A professional’s paddle choice does not tell you which paddle will suit your game. Focus on the touch, handling and confidence you feel on court.

If you compete, check your event’s equipment requirements. A generation label alone does not confirm tournament approval.
